Frankenstein Senior: the scientific basis for a myth in the Palazzo Poggi Collection is a research project aimed to enhance and promote Bologna University’s cultural heritage.
The project shows how the scientific roots of the legend created by English writer Mary Shelley interweave with the experiments performed by Luigi Galvani and his nephew Giovanni Aldini and the animal electricity notion introduced in late 18th century Bologna. With Aldini the animal electricity notion spread through Europe in the form of astounding scientific demonstrations carried out on human corpses in Paris and London amphitheatres and inspired Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus masterpiece published in London in 1818.
The project’s contents have been developed via various communication methods: a docu-fiction programme, a series of events at the Palazzo Poggi Museum, conferences and publications.
